For an entire week, the pub's beer garden transforms into an immersive wonderland, with event decor, circus acts and live bands providing free event entertainment for Bradford-on-Avon's very own Fringe Festival.
For the 2023 edition of Shoestock, SASS Events took the audience on a journey back through time, to a groovy, psychedelic paradise inspired by the 1960s. The highlight of this psychedelic journey was the Saturday night cabaret show, ‘Summer of Love.’ The evening promised a captivating blend of circus performers, and it delivered. Let’s dive into the enchanting world of Shoestock, discuss the technicalities involved in managing such a high-scale event, and relive the mesmerising moments from that unforgettable week.
Transforming an outdoor beer garden into a glittering event venue is no easy feat, but the SASS Events team excelled in bringing their vision to life. After a stage was constructed, handmade decor and beanbags were scattered throughout the beer garden to create an immersive atmosphere and transport guests back in time. An elevated DJ booth and multiple cocktail bars were also erected in the beer garden, with the bars reminiscent of retro hangout spots featuring groovy VW camper decor. The bartenders, clad in tie-dye attire, skilfully crafted speciality cocktails, while event catering was taken care of by local street food vendors Punk Burgers.
The vibrant week of Shoestock saw live poetry from the fantastically funny Merv Grist, while internationally acclaimed circus artists Jess B Hoops and Riff Riff Aurora left the audience mesmerised with their breathtaking performances. Live music was taken care of by Year of the Dog, a brass-house-soul band that spent the summer of 2023 touring on a European scale — they had the crowd up and dancing all night! All the preceding entertainment was building up to the pinnacle of Shoestock's psychedelic journey, the Saturday night cabaret show, ‘Summer of Love’. The much-anticipated cabaret show promised an evening steeped in the spirit of love, peace, and extraordinary performances… and boy, did it deliver.
In the heart of Shoestock's psychedelic wonderland, the Saturday night ‘Summer of Love’ cabaret show unfolded with daring circus performances. With a promise to take the crowd on a psychedelic journey, the stage came alive as a mesmerising aerial chains act kicked off the evening, setting the tone for an extraordinary night. The ambience intensified as the spotlight shifted to aerial hoop performances, pole dancers, aerial silks performers and a breathtaking duo lollipop act. A mind-bending contortionist left the crowd feeling downright trippy! The contortion performer's surreal twists and turns successfully transported everyone to a different dimension.
It wouldn’t be a SASS Events cabaret evening without a fire performance, and true to form, the stage came alive as a daring fire performer skilfully wielded her props as the audience stood in awe. Adding to the enchantment, the fire show ended in a spectacular glitter pour, sprinkling a touch of magic over the audience just before the stage lights dimmed to UV blacklight for the grand finale.
In the grand finale, the stage transformed into a mesmerising LED show, unveiling a duo circus act that combined a fusion of art and technology. One of the performers emerged in UV-reactive full body paint, skilfully spinning LED poi programmed with The Three Horseshoes’ pub emblem. The performance also featured a contact juggling act, complete with laser beams reflecting from the glass spheres to create a truly psychedelic performance.
The LED finale unfolded with captivating LED multi-hula hoop performances and the majestic display of giant LED wings, followed by an immersive UV paint pour that elicited an explosive response from the audience. Of course, with the UV paint flowing, there was one important warning: "Beware of the splash zone!" Some lucky (or perhaps, not-so-lucky) attendees found themselves in the midst of the colourful chaos. While it might have been a bit messy, it was an experience they won't soon forget — don’t say we didn’t warn you!
